ABOUT ME
A major problem with nearly all Transportation Cabinets is limited or no space available
for installing a Battery Back-up System (BBS). Most agencies are forced to pay for an
expensive external enclosure or piggy-back cabinet to provide battery back-up for their
cities. In addition, the Lead Acid batteries currently used in battery back-ups and other
UPS systems are large, heavy, and contain dangerous chemicals which, prior to disposal,
require special handling. Most Lead Acid Battery Back-up Systems need costly routine
maintenance 2-3 times per year. If the routine maintenance is neglected, agencies are
exposed to potential liability issues.
PSI Acquisition, LLC has developed the solution to your Battery Back-up System
problems. The UltraPower-Stealth Battery Back-up System (UPStealth)) utilizes a
unique Battery Pack Panel that can be configured to almost any
shape to fit into spaces and locations inside Transportation Cabinets
not accessible by Lead Acid products. Our
standard UPStealth flexible panels fit into
the Transportation Cabinet’s unused space
between the internal rack and the outside
shell of the cabinet. The battery panel in
this configuration does not take up any rack
space thus eliminating the need for an
expensive external cabinet. In addition,
for NEMA Cabinet users, there is an
innovative UPStealth Shelf Panel which
can be mounted on the top or underside of
the NEMA cabinet shelf. A rack mount
version is also available for other
Transportation Cabinets.
The Main Controller Unit (Inverter) for the UPStealth is only 12” deep (excluding
connectors), 3.5” high (2U), and weighs 18 pounds. There is a 4 line by 20-character
LCD display with an LED back light to display
the status of the system and for setting its
parameters. The Keypad on the front panel has
no moving parts or contacts and is not affected
by even the harshest environmental conditions.
A USB port on the front panel is standard and there is an optional Ethernet / Internet
interface available.
The rear panel of the Inverter provides access to 8-programmable relays which are
controlled by power line conditions and user selected settings of the UPStealth Battery
Back-up System. Each relay has 2-Amp
“normally closed” and “normally open”
contacts. The Relay connectors plug into the
rear panel and can be removed without tools.
There are four circular plastic connectors for
connecting to the UPStealth panels. 42-Amp
pins are used for the battery connections.
Each UPStealth Battery Panel has multiple integrated battery chargers and controllers
that communicate with the Inverter
through a serial communication
interface. Each panel may vary in
weight depending upon the panel
configuration; the battery weight
for a standard 600 watt panel is 37
pounds.
The Inverter can turn each UPStealth Battery Panel ON and OFF and monitors the
condition of each string of batteries through the individual chargers. Because each
UPStealth Battery Panel has its own chargers, adding more battery panels to the system
DOES NOT affect the battery charge time of 4 hours. Up to sixteen panels can be used in
one Battery Back-up System. The standard flexible UPStealth Battery Panels incorporate
a “living” hinge which allows the Panel to be bent and quickly inserted between the
cabinet rack and shell wall without altering the equipment rack. The “living” hinge also
provides the ability to easily remove the battery panel.
PSI spent considerable time choosing the best rechargeable battery chemistry for the
Traffic Industry. Nickel Zinc (NiZn) was chosen for its:
! High energy density and performance
! Environmentally friendly materials
! Durability and overall safety of the cells
! Life, which is twice as long as Lead Acid Batteries
NiZn batteries have no transportation restrictions, are certified as recyclable by the
Rechargeable Battery Recycling Coalition, and are RoHS
Compliant. There are no restrictions with regard to the
disposal of expired cells. NiZn batteries will not explode,
catch fire, nor outgas hazardous fumes even when abused . In
addition, the NiZn rechargeable chemistry does not dissipate
any significant heat.
OPERATION
The
UltraPower-Stealth Battery Back-up System is an intelligent
multiple processor power control system. Each 48 Volt string of cells has its own charger
and monitor board that is controlled by the Inverter. Each charger is individually
addressable and controllable by the Inverter. The Inverter can turn all or just some of the
battery chargers on and off in addition to being able to turn the output of each battery
string on and off. Status information for each battery string in each battery panel is also
available through the serial interface.
Each charger monitors the temperature of its battery string and adjusts the charging
voltage and current to the cells. The charger also monitors the current going out of the
batteries and can turn off the battery pack output if it determines the load is too high. By
monitoring the voltage and current into and out of the battery, the charger can determine
the capacity of the battery string and relay that information to the Inverter. The battery
charger can also turn on an optional heater if the temperature of the battery pack gets too
low.
The Inverter controls the operation of the UPStealth BBS. The Inverter monitors the
power line continuously to determine whether it is supplying the correct power to the
Transportation Cabinet. When the Inverter determines that the AC Power Line does not
meet pre-set parameters, the Cabinet power will be switched to the battery power.
The UPStealth Inverter is an Intelligent Two-Stage Battery Back-up System.
Stage One runs continuously. It contains a transient protection circuit which reduces
the voltage spikes on the AC power that is coming into the Cabinet. The transient
protection can handle 480 joules of energy and 39,000 Amps peak current. In
addition, the input circuit contains an RF filter, which provides attenuation of line
noise of 25 dB at 10 KHz, 65 dB at 100 KHz, and 100 dB at 1 MHz.
Stage Two switches over to the battery power when the power line is outside user
programmed parameters. The AC Line voltage thresholds where the UPStealth
switches over to battery power can be set from the front panel of the Inverter or from
a PC connected to the USB port. The depth of discharge (DOD) can also be
adjusted, allowing the user to maximize battery back-up time while preserving
battery life. The UPStealth can also be programmed to switch over to battery power
based on the time of day to assist with Utility costs during peak energy cost periods
each day.
The UPStealth Inverter has 8-programmable relays it can control based upon several
different parameters including:
Power Failure
Low Battery
Time of Day
Temperature
Time Delay (e.g. for Flash)
On Battery
These can be used to provide status information to the Traffic Controller or control the
Cabinet Flash circuit. Fans, lights, or other enunciators can also be controlled by these
relays.
The Inverter Front Panel Display normally shows the power line voltage, cabinet current
consumption, and battery status. Because the UPStealth is an Intelligent System, it can
monitor the cabinet
Voltage and current,
and knows the battery
status. It can calculate
the back-up time that is
available at any given
time without any input
from the user. An event log is incorporated in the Inverter, which shows a history of the
events that have occurred to the cabinet power. The total number and length of power
failures are stored in memory and can be displayed on the Inverter front panel or
uploaded to a PC. The relay functions are programmable from the front panel of the
Inverter and/or by a PC using the USB port. A user-friendly, menu-driven display and
keypad are used to set parameters in this Intelligent BBS. The keypad selects the menu
and the display shows the options to select.
